Imagine the calming voice of the Pure Michigan commercials, the pastoral images of fall
leaves, white fences along horse-trodden fields and the warm quilt your mother made
when you were young.
Mary Smallegan knows those images - and the Pure Michigan signs with her business
name on them - have directed people to Custom Quilts Unlimited, 6184 Quilters Court,
about a mile and a half south of M-89 on 62nd Street in Ganges Township.
"They've brought in a lot of customers," Smallegan said.
Those customers have become regulars, returning for the store's friendly atmosphere,
Smallegan opened the 3,000-square-foot shop in 2007 after retiring from Johnson
Controls.
No one in her family made quilts. She got interested in the process when she picked up a
magazine and decided that she could stitch the beautiful patterns.
"I made my first quilt and never stopped," she laughed.
She uses a sewing machine and makes her quilts to last.
"They are heirloom quality and outlive us all," she said pointing to the quilts lining her
shop.
They're fun, too.
One quilt is made of old Planet Hollywood T-shirts.
She teaches classes - a free workshop is every Wednesday - and attends quilt shows
along the lakeshore.
"Quilting is an addiction," she said, and can take both time and money. Some kits run
more than $75 depending on the fabric used.
Quilters are dedicated, she said, and know what they spend is an investment in a
product that will last generations. Many travel the country looking for quilt shops like
hers, Smallegan said. That's why she invested in the Pure Michigan signs on M-89, a
main route for tourists between Fennville and Saugatuck and Douglas.
The signs cost more than $700 each a year, but the investment has been worth it.
"It has paid for itself," she said.
